Sora Priangan is a community music ensemble. The program is offered by the Evergreen Club Contemporary Gamelan (ECCG) and directed by Andrew Timar, music educator and suling soloist for ECCG. Membership in this ensemble is open to anyone who wants to learn and enjoy playing the intricate yet lyrical music of gamelan degung. In addition to serving as a relaxed learning environment, our group performs in public. Pictured above is Sora Priangan at the Music Gallery with Nano S. our guest Indonesian master musician and composer.

What is gamelan degung?

"Gamelan" is an Indonesian word meaning "orchestra" while "degung" refers to the kind of instruments we play. Most of our instruments are of the percussion type: large bronze gongs, multi-octave gongchimes, metallophones, a xylophone and hand drums. There is also a zither (kacapi) and a bamboo ring flute (suling), both of which play important elaborating parts in the music. Vocals are often included in performances too. We play music on instruments originally from West Java, Indonesia on the superb gamelan degung of the Evergreen Club Contemporary Gamelan.
